Rick Rosenthal is a life-long television and radio journalist who now works full-time (since 1995) providing media relations training and consulting to public safety agencies.  He teaches from his unique perspective as an award-winning, 30-year-veteran TV and radio news anchorman and reporter, with 22 years on the air in Chicago , including 10 years as senior news anchor on superstation WGN-TV.

He delivers the inside story on who reporters are, how they behave, and why.  He provides real-life strategies and tactics, techniques, and controls that officers from all agencies can use to win with the news media.  His broad range of experience and his expertise as a newsman and trainer have earned him a national reputation as one of the top professionals in the field of news media relations/management.

As a reporter Rosenthal covered numerous critical incidents and saw first-hand the best, and worst, of public safety media relations.  Now, as a trainer and consultant, he has helped thousands of officers from hundreds of federal, state, and local agencies build effective, positive, professional working relationships with the news media, and has helped public safety agencies around the country prepare for and achieve successful management of the news media in times of crisis.

His training is practical, not theoretical, and what he teaches is immediately applicable in the workplace.  His extensive library of video news clips helps illustrate key teaching points, making his training not only informative, but entertaining as well.  His course manual "Feeding the Animals" is recognized as one of the definitive publications in the field of public safety media relations/management.

Rosenthal has presented numerous classes for the Executive Management Program of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety (formerly the Traffic Institute); the Southern Police Institute's Command Officer Development Courses; and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's Management Institutes, as well as dozens of other training academies.

Individual agencies and organizations for which he has provided training include:  the International Association of Chiefs of Police; the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police; the Chicago Police and Fire Departments; several state police agencies; the USDEA; the USEPA-CID; the US Dept. of the Interior - OIG; and the US Marshals Service.  His training has also been featured on the Law Enforcement Training Network, and on the PBS News Hour with Jim Lehrer.

From 1996 to 2002 Rosenthal wrote a monthly media relations column for Law & Order magazine.  In 2000 his columns were recognized by the International Union of Police Associations with a Quill and Badge Award for excellence in law enforcement journalism.

Rosenthal graduated with honors from Princeton University in 1967 with a degree in Political Science/International Law.  He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police; the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police; the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers; the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association; the Illinois Police Instructor Trainers Association; and the Society of Professional Journalists.
